the online live music gig guide for birmingham & the midlands

Rambling Pony

Rambling Pony are a Birmingham-based invitation blues band taking inspiration from a broad spectrum of influences. Songs made famous by Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, Cream and early Fleetwood Mac feature in their powerful live set.

One of the most interesting features of this group is that they can draw on a diverse combination of instruments within the group. Numbers have featured banjo, percussion, piano, organ, four different guitar combinations, from semi-acoustic slide to blistering solo, harmonica, 3-part female backing harmonies, 3 different lead vocalists, and all within a thirty minute show! It is this that sets them apart from the usual Pub Blues combos gigging on the circuit. Add to this the visual appeal of the group from their charismatic frontman and leader Derek Horne, to the stunning backing vocal trio via the chiselled good looks of the rhythm and melody sections, it's no wonder they have developed a loyal and rapidly-expanding local fanbase, with standing room coming at a premium at their packed shows. Definitely one to catch if you want to see Blues being performed in a fresh, innovative and exciting way.
